I really hoped I would never have to write about this subject. I prayed to the Basketball Gods, the same gods that allowed Kawhi Leonard‘s shot to go in Sunday night, that this day would never come. I guess I didn’t pray hard enough because now there’s talk surrounding LeBron James as a trade asset for Ben Simmons.

The Lakers season obviously did not go as planned. They started this year with a “Win Now” mentality by signing superstar LeBron James, bringing in the supporting cast of Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson, Javale McGee, and keeping their draft picks Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, and Brandon Ingram. The 76ers finished their season much more respectably, but still didn’t get the ending they anticipated. The 76ers lost Sunday night to the Basketball Gods and the Raptors. They began the year with superstars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, and through various trades they acquired Jimmy Butler from the Timberwolves and Tobias Harris from the Clippers. Apparently, the 76ers think they can convince the Lakers that having a non-shooting PG is better than having a Top 3 player ever.

Let’s breakdown this trade idea. Hopefully this wouldn’t be a player for player trade, and let’s assume it isn’t. Instead, let’s assume the 76ers are willing to give up Ben Simmons, another player, and a future first round pick. Any role player could fit the spot for this trade, but we’re going to include the man who has already been traded 3 times, Boban Marjanović. Unless the Lakers have a full hemorrhage, they would never accept this trade. Let’s switch Boban out for a guard like JJ Redick or TJ McConnell. Even then, the Sixers can’t complete this trade without getting shammed. LeBron is a generational talent, but he’s not worth sacrificing a team for.

Until the NBA Draft happens on June 20th, most reports will be small stories blown up to fill space and keep the NBA relevant. If this trade actually happens and Ben Simmons ends up in LA and LeBron in Philadelphia, I won’t know what to do with myself.
